"Why I Choose To Live A Drug-Free Life"

5th Grade Essay Contest


5th Graders from every Indiana County participated in the 2003 essay contest.  Students composed an original essay on the subject “What Being A Good Citizen Means To Me.”

One winner was selected from each county and received an Award Certificate, an engraved plaque, as well as a U.S. Savings Bond. From the county winners, a statewide winner was selected along with 4 runners-up. Troopers from across the state attended end of year Awards Programs and presented certificates to county winners.

  • Statewide Winner:  Chelsey Cripe – Fowler Elementary – Benton County
  • 2nd Place:  Erin Bowman – Union Elementary – Union County
  • 3rd Place:  Natalie Campbell – Loge Elementary – Warrick County
  • 4th Place:  Tim Clawson – Eastview Elementary – Fayette County
  • 5th Place:  Sarah Paul – Tri-Elementary – Henry County

  On June 13th, all winners, their families, school officials and  invited guests gathered at the State House in Indianapolis for the Statewide Awards Program.  Guest speakers included Supt. of Public Instruction, Dr. Suellen Reed, ISP Supt. Melvin Carraway and ITA President Duane Davies.   Assisting with the presentation of plaques and bonds were ITA Executive Director Ernest Alder and Debra Deuter, widow of David Deuter.  The attendees were treated to a special performance by Jungle John and his Silly Safari, which was enjoyed by all.   Approximately, 500 attended the special event.
