Statewide Awards Program

"What Being a Good Citizen Means To Me"

On Friday, June 10th, the winners in the David Deuter Memorial 5th Grade Essay Program will gather at the Indiana State House for the Annual Statewide Awards Program.

Guest speakers for the event will be: Governor Mitch Daniels, Indiana State Police Superintendent Dr. Paul Whitesell and Superintendent of Public Instruction, Dr. Suellen Reed, as well as ITA representatives.

Fifth graders from across Indiana were invited to compose an original essay in approximately 100 words on the subject, "What Being A Good Citizen Means To Me".

One winner was selected from each participating Indiana County. From the county winners, a statewide winner and four runners-up were selected. The statewide winner receives a $1,000 savings bond, the runners-up receive $500 bonds, and all other county winners receive $100 bonds. All winners receive engraved plaques, "You Make A Difference Awards" from the Governor's office, commemorative shirts and a gift bag, from the ITA.

While many county awards have already been presented at the student's school during end of year Awards Day Programs, the statewide program provides an opportunity to bring all the winners together at the Indiana State House to be honored by state officials. School officials and legislators, as well as family members, are also invited to attend the standing room only event.
To polish off the statewide program, Jungle John and his Silly Safari provide a fun and educational presentation for the attendees.
The Awards Program is co-sponsored by the Indiana Troopers Association and Pete Irving of Irving Materials in Greenfield.
