1997 First Annual
The Thanksgiving dinner table in ninety-two homes in Indiana was filled with a bountiful array of food compliments of the Indiana Troopers Association. This gift was made possible by the generosity of the residents of the state of Indiana through their donations to the association.
The 1997 project was the first Annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Program sponsored by the Indiana Troopers Association. Working with randomly selected elementary schools in each county in the state, a family was selected to receive the food basket gift. Families were selected based on family hardships, such as family illness, medical expenses, loss of job, or other personal trauma.
The basket was included non-perishable meat, vegetable and staple items, as well as fruit, desserts and beverage mixes. The basket was designed to provide a well-balanced meal for a family of four to six. The baskets were delivered just prior to the holiday by UPS to either the recipient's home address or to the selected school for their delivery.
Response from the selected schools was excellent and the ITA plans to make this an annual program for their association. The Holiday Food Basket Program is just one of many planned programs through which the Indiana Troopers Association hopes to reach out to the families in our state and lend a helping hand.
